Conditions That We Commonly Treat

Common Questions Regarding Acupuncture

+ Am I a candidate for acupuncture and integrative medicine?

This form of evidence-based medicine has been clinically proven to help with a variety of conditions, especially those that have been long-standing.

As primary care physicians, we are trained to effectively assess when we can help a condition or if a case needs to be referred to other specialists, such as chiropractors, physical therapists, oncologists, clinical psychologists, etc.

+ How many visits will I need?

Each case is individually evaluated to determine the best treatment plan. The more severe or chronic the case, the more treatments it will take to reach the desired goal. As with any type of therapy, deviating away from the treatment plan often leads to a delayed healing response; therefore, it is extremely important to reserve the time and continue the consistent care to optimize vitality.

For patients that come in for preventative care or have reached their level of optimal vitality, it is highly encouraged to schedule monthly maintenance visits, aka tune-ups, to help keep the body strong and vibrant.

We strive to improve the quality of life for each and every patient we see.

+ How should I prepare for my first visit?

  1. Set aside time before and after your appointment.
  2. Bring a list of all your current medications and supplements or upload the list into your Patient Portal.
  3. Eat a snack or small meal 30-minutes to an hour before your appointment.
  4. Avoid caffeinated beverages before your appointment, as stimulants may trigger your fight-or-flight response.
  5. Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing or bring a change of clothing for your treatment.
  6. Complete the Covid-19 Clearance Form prior to your visit and arrive at your scheduled time.

+ Is this procedure painful?

No; however, it is typical to feel sensations, such as warmth, a quick pinch or heaviness, indicating that the brain and body are actively communicating with each other. Most patients experience deep relaxation and may even take a mini-nap feeling refreshed afterwards.

+ If I’m scheduled for surgery, should I come in before or after?

Typically, the answer is both.

Our pre-operative care focuses on strengthening the immune system, eliminating pain, and enhancing circulation.

Our post-surgical care focuses on reducing scar formation, adhesions, boosting recovery time and providing functional support to get back to a robust life.

+ Do you take insurance?

As of December 1, 2020, both Dr. Shivali Panchal Gruer and Dr. Dimitri Gruer are out-of-network providers. The office accepts FSA and HSA wellness cards and offers superbills for direct reimbursement for plans that provide out-of-network acupuncture coverage. Insurance companies only cover a limited number of visits and conditions without focusing on optimal corrective care.

+ What is a healing crisis?

For a small percentage of new patients that are suffering from chronic ailments, autoimmune conditions or stress-related syndromes, the body may undergo a temporary worsening of symptoms for a 12-24 hour period known as a healing crisis. A healing crisis is a form of an intense shift of toxic burden and a nervous system reset (similar to the effects of a new workout). In this situation, the body will feel significant relief within a day or two.
